Safe Environment

We are are Safe Environment Parish!

Safe Environment Coordinator
for St. Mary Magdalene:
Deacon Bert Chavez

Awareness that child sexual abuse exists and can exist anywhere is a start. It is then critical to build safety barriers around children and young people to keep them from harm. These barriers come in the form of protective guardians, codes of conduct, background evaluations, policies and procedures and safety training programs.

Under the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, all employees and those volunteers with access to children must complete a course in prevention education. The training program the Diocese of Charleston chooses to use is Safe Haven.

This program is not just for employees and volunteers. We encourage everyone to watch the Safe Haven online videos and learn to recognize signs of sexual abuse. It is the responsibility of all to be the eyes of this parish and protect our children.
