Micheal J. McGarry, Sr.

Director of Evangelization

Getting to Know Michael

Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

My lovely wife, Paula, and I have been  married for more than 36 years. We have three children, Michael Jr., Brian and Tara; all are married. We have three grandchildren and one on the way. We became parishioners in June 1998 when we moved here from Buffalo, New York.

How long have you worked at the parish and what do you like best about it?

I have a passion for this parish. It is the reason I applied for and accepted the position of Director of Evangelization in June 2016. For a long time I felt God calling me to work for him, and after taking Living Your Strengths and then reading Sherry Waddell’s book, Forming Intentional Disciples, I realized that I was being called to serve in a deeper role than I had at the time.

What I love about my job? The people. I really love   helping people grow in their faith journey.

What are some of your hobbies and interest?

Football … I love football. I watch it, I referee it and I cheer it. I’m a total Clemson fan. Music is my other love, and a talent I’ve been able to offer our Music Ministry; whether playing the trumpet, singing and conducting the choir, it’s a passion that was instilled in me at a very young age by my grandmother who, herself, was a choir mistress and organist.

Staff Role: Director of Evangelization

As Director of Evangelization (DOE), I am responsible for working with the Pastor, the Vicars, Staff and Ministries to create a   culture change at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church; that is, to build a parish community that is committed to Pope   Francis’s call to the “New Evangelization” and bringing the Gospel story to the world.

I support the Pastor’s vision for St. Mary Magdalene to become an inviting community and beacon of Christ’s light making disciples who lead others to Jesus. In that role, I oversee the pastoral and faith formation efforts including Christian formation, adult evangelization and catechesis, the ministries, the preschool, administration for the Sacrament of Baptism, funerals, weddings, youth and young adult ministries.

I serve on a number of councils and committees either as a member or an ex-officio (non-voting member). These include the Pastoral Council, the budget subcommittee of the Finance Council, Long-Range Planning, Liturgy, Adult Evangelization and Catechesis and Communications.

As DOE I am responsible for implementing ways to reach out to those active, inactive and the unchurched in our community, and to offer support, encouragement, presence and ongoing evangelization opportunities to volunteer ministers.
