PREPARATION FOR THE JOY TO COME

Clergy Corner by Fr. Robert Falabella

In a few days, we will be celebrating Palm Sunday, which ushers in the final week of Lent and the Sacred Paschal Triduum -- Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday -- which summarizes Christ having accomplished his work of our redemption and of the perfect glorification of God (today’s Gospel). It is “principally through his Paschal Mystery, in which by dying he has destroyed our death and by rising restored our life. Let us reflect on the  profound Revelations God reveals to us on these holiest of days” (Paulist Press Ordo).

HOLY THURSDAY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER: It is so far   beyond our minds to comprehend what our Lord suffered on Holy Thursday night to bring about our salvation: the torture He was about to endure, following His institution of the Holy Eucharist and Sacrament of Holy Orders; all the while knowing full well that Judas was about to betray Him.

GOOD FRIDAY: THE PASSION OF THE LORD: Here we prayerfully fast and abstain, as we call to mind and honor the “suffering and death of our Lord Jesus, and thus prepare ourselves to experience more deeply in the Mystery of His resurrection,” by sharing our sufferings -- now having salvific meaning with the Mystical Body of Christ.

We are also taught how God can bring good out of suffering: namely, redemption from sin’s enslavement, with a true reconciliation with God, in which we are  assured that “living with Christ, suffering with Christ, dying with Christ, so shall we be raised with himto eternal life.

HOLY SATURDAY: THE EASTER VIGIL -- THE HOLY NIGHT: This Church liturgy embraces a historical summary of God’s plan for Mankind’s Redemption, as presented through scripture and prayer up to the Mass of the Resurrection of Christ. We celebrate God’s revelation to us of our redemption through the obedience of Christ to the Father’s will and, in Christ’s Resurrection, God   reveals to us that our destiny is not the tomb, but our participation in the Mystery of the glorified risen Body of Jesus Christ -- forever sharing -- in Eternal Life and Joy -- with God!!
