Standing up for Religious Freedom

Clergy Corner by Fr. David Runnion

Clergy Corner for July 10, 2016, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

While the "Fortnight for Freedom" ended on July 4th, Christians throughout America continue to stand up for religious freedom, in light of ongoing governmental oppression.

The US government has forced Catholic Charities to stop providing adoption and foster care services simply because it does not believe the best home for a child is with practicing homosexuals. Obamacare and the President unrelentingly seek to deny freedom of conscience, and to punish all who do not aid their immoral mandate to help kill unborn babies. The IRS reportedly targeted Catholics and Christians with punishing audits because they truthfully pointed out that Obamacare promotes abortion. The current administration has also denied the Catholic Bishops' permission to continue its expert assistance to refugees, solely for refusing to provide abortions to kill children of the refugees. In addition, courts, universities, and other powerful institutions are now denying access to Christians, and only to Christians, to facilities available to everyone else, and trying to force churches, on their private property, to perform immoral ceremonies that pervert divine and natural law for marriage between a man and a woman. And, the list goes on.[1]

All life comes from God. Marriage and family, as God ordained it between one man and one woman, are the basic units of the Church and of society. Faith in God and the opportunity to practice this faith are, after the right to life, the highest freedom necessary in society. When the government can punish any individual, business, and denomination simply due to their religious beliefs, all freedom is at risk.

As persons of faith who stand up for the truth, we continue to:

-Pray for the protection of life, Holy Matrimony, religious liberty and increased respect for the role of faith in public life, and for those who attack these freedoms.

-Educate ourselves and our family, friends, and neighbors, including through the resources at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/fortnight-for-freedom/index.cfm.

-Support activities and events that stand up for religious liberty.

-Vote our conscience and ask our elected officials to uphold religious freedom.

The precepts of the Lord lead to life, so we gladly follow them, and share them with others out of love for them and concern for their eternal well-being.

And, while we continue to pray and work for the protection of life, Holy Matrimony, and religious freedom, we also continue to trust in the Lord and remain confident in Him!
