Advent: Our Path to Eternity

Clergy Corner by Fr. Robert Falabella

The Gospels of Advent deal in various ways with the “coming” of Jesus -- most specifically in the sense of the Parousia -- the PRESENCE of Jesus in the final coming to judge the “living and the dead” -- the “living” being those whose souls are radiant with the beauty of God’s Image -- perfectly realized, since the heavenly Father sees and loves in each of these souls what He sees and loves in His Divine Son. Recall Saint Paul’s words: “I live, now not I but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20), while the “dead” are those who left this world with their souls devoid of God’s Image which they lost through a life dedicated to sinfulness rather than holiness -- and thus explains the words of Christ: “I do not know you, workers of iniquity…depart from me you accursed into everlasting fire prepared for you and the devil and his angels” (Luke 13:27) (Matthew 25:41).

However, the season of Christmas -- the fruit of Advent -- also deals with the fact that Christ indeed has come into “time” 2000 years ago and is with us to this day to help us prepare even now for that Second Coming (Parousia) of Christ at the LAST Judgment, where we will be judged “publically” as to the kind of life we lived while here on earth -- with eternity before us -- an   eternity being either one of joy or regret (CF: Catechism of the Catholic Church #’s 1033-1050).

Let us, then, pray to those awesome Saints, Joseph and Mary -- Principals in the Mystery of Advent -- that we, too, will follow their example by unconditionally       accepting into our own lives this Christmas Gift of God’s Love for us, in the form of living with this Mystery of the Incarnate Word of God, as set forth through the        Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, so that we too can experience this ultimate perennial Christmas Gift -- Jesus Christ -- a gift we are called to share with others throughout our life on earth -- the prelude to the “heavenly ecstasy” of our sharing with each other  forever in the eternal love and life of God -- Advent: Our Path To Eternity!
