If Not, Why Not?

Clergy Corner by Fr. Williams

The Gospel this weekend leads us to ask a simple question… “If not, why not?”

What do you know in your heart to be absolutely true?
What do you know to be real? Genuine? Pure? Everlasting?
Are these things most important to you?
If not, why not?

What is true?  What is good? What is beautiful in this world?
Are these things most important to you?
If not, why not?

Do you know where all these good things come from? Who it is that stands behind them?
When He speaks into your heart, do you listen?
When He tugs at your soul, do you let it be moved?
If not, why not?

What is it that you love then more than God?
When you are alone and idle, what draws your gaze more than those things that are good, true, and beautiful?
Don’t you know those things are not worthy of Him? That they are not worthy of you?
If not, why not?

Have you received well those who speak the truth despite being persecuted for it?
Have you received well those who do good things despite the world’s hate of them?
Have you received those who defend the truth, what is beautiful in the face of distortions?
If not, why not?

What worldly things have you found in life that are causing you to lose it?
Don’t you know the reward for those who strive for good things?  For true things? For truly good and beautiful things in this world?
Have you seen their fruits in your life?
If not, why not?

Today is the day.  This week is your week. Remove the obstacles. Be worthy.  Take up your cross and follow after Him.  Receive those who receive Him and I say to you, you will surely not lose your reward.
