The Greatest Showman

Clergy Corner by Fr. Williams

I always tell people that every movie, every song, no matter the setting, has a lesson that can be pulled out. The thing is that that lesson might not always be good J. One that surprised me recently was the soundtrack and movie of The Greatest Showman. There are actually many great lessons to be taken from the songs and the movie itself. One of them is the difference between the songs of “Never Enough” and “From Now On.” The lesson learned from a flawed life perspective of always wanting more and more, and the lessons learned of the aftermath of greed and complacency. Check it out if you are bored this weekend.

This weekend in the Scriptures we hear in the first  reading and the Gospel a similar story to the Greatest Showman. In the first reading we hear the cry of Amos, “Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying on beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches.” We are being warned, exhorted and called from our complacency to action. In the Gospel, “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day” … Yet, once his life ended and the important things were weighed, he was found    wanting and only then became impassioned to go on mission to his living brothers, but by then it was too late.

My brothers and sisters, flip this story! Let the mission of reaching out NEVER BE ENOUGH! Don’t let your eyes be ‘blinded by the light’ of the world! Leave the ‘towers of gold.’ Let your attachment to the world fall away, so that FROM NOW ON, you can reach out and always be looking for ways to bring someone to God. Let the  promise of God be like an ‘anthem in your heart.’ Search out the poor Lazarus of today’s Gospel. Give and don’t count the cost.
