The Lord's coming is nigh!

Clergy Corner by Fr. David A. Runnion for December 20, 2015

Clergy Corner for December 20, 2015, Fourth Sunday of Advent
Micah 5:1-4a; Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19; Hebrews 10:5-10; Luke 1:39-45

The Lord's coming is nigh!

Through the prophet Micah, God foretold Christ's first coming:

You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old (Mi 5:1).

He also revealed Christ's nature as Good Shepherd and Prince of Peace:

He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace (Mi 5:3-4).

Christ the Lord is the Shepherd Who comes in power to save us (Ps 80:1-20). He comes to replace the disobedience of Adam with the perfect obedience of the only begotten Son of God (see Heb 10:5-10), a Son Who will obey God the Father even unto death on the Cross, willingly sacrificing His own life to pay the penalty for our sins (see Php 2:5-8).

When His birth through the Virgin Mary was imminent, God's Spirit moved St. John the Baptist to leap in his mother's womb, and then inspired his mother, St. Elizabeth, to joyfully exclaim how blessed were Mary and the baby Jesus in her womb (Lk 1:39-45). She recognized the Lord through His mother, God's promise to her, and the Holy Spirit's prompting:

And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Lk 1:43).

Now, in our own time, in just a few days, the Lord Himself will come to us anew, as we celebrate His birth though His Mother Mary.

Let us then make our final preparations for Christ's coming anew into our life, so that this Christmas, on His Birthday, He may be born again – this time in the manger of our heart.

Come, Long Awaited Savior, to redeem Your people and the whole world!
