Catechists

This is a Defining Moment for Our Parish

Every year, children at St. Mary Magdalene need faithful adults who are willing to show up, encourage them, and help them grow closer to Jesus Christ. With this being the Year of Catechesis… could God be inviting you to be part of something meaningful?

Many people hesitate because they think:

  • “I’m not qualified.”

  • “I don’t know enough.”

  • “I’m too busy.”

But the truth is: You do not need to be a theology expert to become a catechist.

Great catechists are simply people who care, listen, encourage, and are willing to let God work through them. If you have ever guided a child, supported a family member, encouraged someone in faith, or helped others feel welcome, you may already have the gifts needed for this ministry.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. A willingness to grow in faith, care for children, and serve faithfully is what matters most. We provide resources, guidance, and support along the way.

  • Many catechists begin feeling exactly the same way. You are not expected to have all the answers. God often works through ordinary people who are simply willing to say yes. And when we can (based on the number of volunteers we have), we place two adults in a classroom.

  • This year, we are expanding our support for catechists through:

    • Pre-year training and formation days

    • In-service gatherings throughout the year for mentorship, idea sharing, and encouragement

    • Clear teaching frameworks and classroom guidance

    • Engaging videos, digital resources, and ready-to-use materials

    • Ongoing communication and responsive leadership support

  • Weekly sessions typically run between 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • We understand that life is full. That is why whenever possible we place two adults in a classroom and operate a substitution list.

  • All adult volunteers complete Safe Environment (Virtus) training and a background check through the Diocese of Charleston.

  • Yes. Substitute catechists, hospitality volunteers, event support, and administrative roles are all important parts of the ministry.

  • Our classes are taught in English, and bilingual books are used to support Spanish-speaking families. You do not need perfect English to serve in many volunteer roles. Hospitality, classroom assistance, relationship-building, and supporting children are all valuable parts of the ministry.
